The Basics of Starting a Business

Starting a business can be a dream come true, but you need to make sure you have the basics down before you get started.  For instance, do you need permits or licenses? Tax IDs, Insurance, a Patent, or Distribution?What about Branding and Trademarks? Do you have a business plan?   Should you Incorporate... or should just form an LLC?  There are a lot of questions that need to be answered before you dive right in.   The most successful business start with a great business plan.

So how do you start  your own business?

Start with these steps:

  1. Decide What You Want to do... then Research your Idea and it's Competition      (never hurry to decide).  Is is realistic?  Does it have potential?
  2. Get Free Help.  Check with your local community center, Chamber of Commerce, and non-profit agencies for new business owner courses and help.
  3. Is it totally original?  Do you need a Patent, Copyright or Trademark?
  4. Make a Business Plan
  5. Consider the following:
          *Accounting and Cash Flow
          *Financing and Expenses
          *Communications
          * Marketing and Branding
          *Employees and Insurance
          *Licenses and Permits
          *Expanding
          *Management
          *Home Based Business, or Business Office
  6.  Register Your New Business -- Inc. (S Corp or C Corp), LLC, LLP, Sole Proprietor, etc.
  7. Make Sure You Have the Necessary Permits and Licenses
  8. Obtain Financing and Grants (did you know you can get free money?)
  9. Be sure to consult with an attorney and your accountant.  It's always best to protect yourself and let an attorney or accountant advise you as to federal, state and local labor and tax laws.
