What is Colon Cleansing?
In recent years there has been a lot of hype about colon cleansing. Some practitioners swear by it, while conventional medical opinion puts less value on it and isn't so sure its even necessary. Still, those who have done it and achieved results swear by it.
So, what exactly is colon cleansing? Colon cleansing is the process of cleaning out fecal matter and toxins from your colon and intestinal tract. It is designed to not only remove toxins, fecal matter, mucus and gook, but reduce gas and bloating, increase energy levels and flatten your stomach. Colon cleansing can be accomplished by both hydrotherapy and by oral methods. Hydrotherapy methods are popular, but oral supplements have been gaining ground because of the length and uncomfortable nature of the process, and the smells associated with it.
In colon hydrotherapy, you will use an enema to force water ,or a mixture of water and herbs or other liquids, into your colon, to clean out excess waste. In the oral method, people use fiber, herbs, laxatives and dietary supplements. Laxatives can have a harsh effect, it is nearly impossible for most people to find the right herb combinations and sometimes fiber alone is not enough. That is why there have been products developed like dietary supplements to make the process a little less complicated.

Some of you may think that Colon Cleansing is just a recent fad. But the history of it goes back at far as Ancient Egypt in 1500 BC. The Ancient Egyptians used hydrotherapy as relief from constipation and to prevent autointoxication (self-poisoning). Autointoxication was a belief widely accepted by Ancient Egyptians and Greeks. Since then, conventional (ie: Western Medicine) has made a point of discrediting the autointoxication theory, however practitioners disagree -- as do many of their patients and clients.
Can it Really Help You Lose Weight?
Yes. It can help you lose weight -- but there

little more to the story. Cleaning your colon and detoxifying your body eliminates the excess waste. You will lose weight, you will relieve bloating and you will see noticeable results --but it will not make you lose fat. Colon cleansing in and of itself is not a fat loss solution. The colon consists of the large intestine, rectum and anus, is about 5 1/2 feet long and 2 1/2 feet in diameter. When you eat unhealthily, don't exercise enough, have problems with excessive constipation or just suffer from ineffiecient waste removal, fecal matter gets trapped and stuck to the colon walls -- both to the mucus there and minute herniated areas throughout. This is waste that should have been released from your body, and waste that is a rotting poison to your tissues.

You have heard all the wonderful benefits, but what are the risks? Some doctors warn against colon cleansing, not so much as to the process itself, but because of the manner it is approached and executed.
When doing a colon cleanse through hydrotherapy methods (rectal, liquid methods... like colon irrigation and enemas) there have been rare cases of heart failure attributed to electrolyte imbalances (due to excessive aborption of excess water during the colon cleanse process) and perforations (holes/snags) in the rectum and colon. You also run the risk of infection from unsanitary equipment or conditions, just as in any procedure. The oral methods require you remember to follow the dosage instructions and read the ingredients to search for any potential allergies to ingredients.
Both hydrotherapy and oral methods additionally add the risk of removing the good bacteria (pro-biotics) from our intestines that help our intestines to digest and remove food normally. It should be noted, however, that the benefits from colon cleansing seem to far outweight the risks.
What About Colon Cancer?
Check any reliable medical source about colon cancer and you will find that there is plenty to say about the relationship between colon cancer, dead cell waste and toxins in the colon. Having had an immediate family member diagnosed with colon cancer recently, it has put a huge focus on the removal of toxins in my family. We were lucky. A colonoscopy found the cancer and the surgery was successful. A follow-up check found other polyps, but they were removed and everything is great.
