First let me tell you what apple cider vinegar is and where it comes from. Apple cider vinegar is natural product derived through the fermentation of apple juice. It begins with turning apple juice to hard apple cider, and then a second fermentation which results in the apple cider vinegar. Through this process it maintains the fine nutritional attributes of the orginal apples, but also includes the added enzymes and extra acids that occur as a result of the fermentation process.
My Experience Orginally I used apple cider vinegar for weight loss help. I found that using the liquid for an extended period of time on a regular basis was too much of a task for me. I cannot say definitively whether or not it helped me lose a couple pounds or if it helped me maintain my weight, but I do know this..
Since I started using it 4 years ago, I have never been seriously ill since!
What I mean is, I used to get the flu or flu-type sicknesses once or twice every year -- the kind that kept you down and out for days. I have never been sick in that manner since.
Uses and Benefits
There are many uses for apple cider vinegar that have been around for centuries, but as it pertains to weight loss, many of the theories of its benefits are related to the breakdown of protein. These theories have never been proven, but many swear by their results. Several theorized benefits are as follows:
Appetite Supressant (related to the pectin in the apples)
Reduces Cravings for sweets and foods containing a lot of salt and fat
Increases Metabolism. Acetic acid helps in the digestion of Protein (the building block of growth hormones). Increased levels of protein breakdown can aid in growth hormones being released by the pituitary gland --leading to an increased metabolism while you sleep.
Improved Attitude/Feeling of Well-being. The proteins released during the improved digestion help build an amino acid called tryptophan. You may have heard of this particular amino acid before, because tryptophan has been talked about by news outlets every Thanksgiving for years (many people experience being tired after eating foods that contain tryptophan, like turkey). This trytophan is needed to produce seratonin, which is natural mood stabilizing chemical produced by our bodies. Seratonin, in turn, helps us maintain a feeling of peacefulness and tranquility that is said to reduce stress-induced eating.
Improved digestion. The less time food spends in our digestive tracts the less we will absorb excess fats.
Decreased Water Retention. We eat a lot of processed foods and a lot of salt. These contain sodium, which is a leading cause of water retention. Apple cider vinegar contains potassium, which contributes to balancing the amount of sodium in your body, thus reducing the amount of water your body holds onto.
How Do You Use It Take 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar 15-20 minutes before each meal. It may be taken in a glass of water (no more than 8oz) or taken straight. You may also sweeten with 2 tablespoons of raw honey.
It is extremely acidic so many people have opted for the pills instead. I happen to believe the straight, unfiltered apple cider vinegar works the best, but I now have opted for the pills myself.
